What materials are Caravana pieces made from?

All the fabrics we use are natural fibers. CARAVANA’s materials range from 100% cotton, cow leather and pheasant, rooster and/or duck feathers.

The fabric used is natural and its cotton is processed in Mexico. CARAVANA’s suppliers of raw materials have created the looms of jute, gauze, handmade blanket, etc, and we’ve been one of the first companies in the Yucatan Peninsula to be able to state that these products are made with 100% Mexican raw material.

Our leather is also sourced locally within the Yucatan Peninsula. The majority of the leather we use comes from a TIF Certified local market of Tizimin and is a by-product of the agricultural industry of the Peninsula. The TIF certificate is issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (SAGARPA) of Mexico and certifies good practices in livestock trails. 80% of the tannery process is done with tree bark.

Are Caravana items sustainable?

At CARAVANA, sustainability is defined as the responsible interplay of having a positive environmental, social and human impact. We believe fashion is not an industry but a community of ARTisans who should be rewarded and honored for their talent. We believe that in order to create pieces that go beyond mere superficial beauty we should develop the awareness of appreciating and caring for the craftsmanship and the human hand involved behind it. In order to provide great products, we must provide physical, emotional and spiritual welfare.

At CARAVANA, we only use natural fibers, rejecting all types of materials such as nylon, polyester or plastics. We don’t even use buttons, trying to optimize as much as possible the manufacturing process of our pieces and accessories. Since our pieces are made from natural fibers, they can be safely decomposed into the natural environment without affecting it in a negative way and supporting the soil with microbiological life and bacteria.

We are also proud to state that 95% of our raw materials are sourced within Mexico. The only raw material imported are the feathers used for key selected pieces. Our feathers come from a cruelty-free farm that ethically sources the bird’s plumage. They are naturally molted by the bird and then collected for sterilization and sale. All of these naturally molted feathers are collected from the bird sanctuary and they only molt once a year which is why they are extremely limited. No birds are harmed exclusively for their feathers.

We strive to uphold cultural respect and social responsibility. All our pieces and accessories are handmade in our workshop in Valladolid (Mexico) each taking many hours to create. Our artisanal processes ensure less waste and less mass production. In a world so industrialized, CARAVANA commits to preserving the magic and traditions of the Mayan culture.
